Hi Reader,
Happy New Year!
A reader contacted me because they had a question regarding my article on uterine rupture and birth intervals, so I created an Instagram reel answering their question.
They found an article on another website that appeared to cite a more recent study.
But when I looked at that article, I saw that they cited not a single piece of research, but the Canadian VBAC guidelines… which citied one of the pieces of research that I have in my article.
This brings up a good point: New research doesn’t necessarily supersede all prior research just because it’s new.
We need to qualify that new research.
How was it conducted?
What was the strength of their findings?
(I touch on how to do that here.)
The other thing to remember is that in order to get an understanding of what the research says about a specific topic, you need to read all that research on that topic and qualify it.
Pulling out a single study does not give us that perspective.
(Sidenote: This is why conversations about the evidence in online groups often fall flat.
Everyone is sharing studies, but few, if any, know how to read those studies, evaluate the research, and then provide an accurate summary.
So while there are a lot of studies flying around, no one is able to really make sense of what the studies actually say.)
This is why we have developed courses and trainings for not only parents, but professionals.
Parents have a hard enough time managing all the misinformation thrown at them. Our course, "The Truth About VBAC™ for Families," helps parents achieve clarity on the VBAC evidence so they can make informed choices, and identify misinformation, as they confidently plan their birth.
If you are curious about VBAC, or are planning one, this course is for you.
For professionals who want to increase access to VBAC, we have professional membership.
And one of the benefits of joining is access to our Continuing Education Training Series.
This series is the single best way for professionals to easily get up to speed on VBAC... rather than listening to misguided colleagues or quoting patients outrageous statistics like a 20% uterine rupture rate after three cesareans. (It happens far too often.)
Another benefit of membership is our Birthing Parent Handout Series which enables members to quickly share the same trusted information with their clients.
If you have any questions about either of these offerings, let me know!
In solidarity,

Hi Reader, I have so many parents who come to me because they are trying to have a VBAC. I want to offer you something. If you want a VBAC, try saying, "I'm planning a VBAC" or "I will labor after a cesarean" or even "I'm going to have a VBAC" rather than "I'm going to try." Do you feel the slight difference in those statements? The first three hold intention. Power. Strength. Clarity. The person saying them is someone who knows what they want. And every time that person says those words,...
Hi Reader, Sometimes this work can be tough. Of course I want to be encouraging, but I also want to be honest. I believe being honest is encouraging because it's kind. It's true. It's authentic. So here it goes... Here's the honest truth: A VBAC is not going to fall into your lap. All along the way, you will have the opportunity to make choices to create the conditions that will put you on the road to VBAC. When I think about my own VBAC journey, there are so many qualities that came up for...
Hi Reader, More good news... on June 1, 2023, the Governor of Iowa signed HF 265 which makes certified professional midwives (CPMs) legal and regulated... all while protecting VBAC. You can read the press release for more details, but I wanted to draw your attention to four aspects of this bill. First, it doesn't mention prior cesarean or prior uterine surgery. This is good because often when these histories are highlighted, it is to limit the scope of practice for CPMs. No call out equals no...
